Diabetic Care Q & A

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects your body’s ability to convert your blood sugar into energy. Normally, your body relies on a hormone called insulin that your pancreas produces to let blood sugar into your cells to be converted into energy.

When you don’t produce enough insulin to keep up with this process, blood sugar remains and builds up in your blood, increasing your risk of serious health complications like stroke and heart disease.

What are the main types of diabetes?

Diabetes is categorized into two main types that differ in their underlying causes. Dr. Bobé assesses your symptoms and runs tests to find out which type you have.

Type 1 diabetes

Lifestyle factors do not cause type 1 diabetes. In fact, many people develop it as children or young adults. If you have it, your immune system stops your body from producing its own insulin.

Type 2 diabetes

If you have type 2 diabetes, your body produces its own insulin, but not enough to keep up with your sugar intake. It’s the most common type of diabetes and is linked to an inactive lifestyle and poor diet, which often appears in patients with obesity.

How can I treat and manage my condition with diabetic care?

Everyone with type 1 diabetes and many patients with type 2 diabetes must monitor their own blood sugar levels using a device called a glucometer. Dr. Bobé may give you insulin in the form of injections or inhalants to balance your blood sugar levels. He may also give you specific instructions on how to use your device and manage your condition.

With diabetic care, Dr. Bobé aims to minimize the need for additional diabetes medications by promoting a healthy lifestyle in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Can I prevent myself from getting diabetes?

You can’t prevent yourself from getting type 1 diabetes, but there are steps you can take to prevent the devel

opment of type 2. If you’re at risk of getting the disease, Dr. Bobé may recommend these steps to help you avoid it:

  • Losing weight
  • Getting exercise five days per week
  • Choosing water over sugary drinks
  • Eating smaller portions
  • Eating healthier foods
  • Limiting your alcohol consumption

It’s especially important to follow these steps if Dr. Bobé diagnoses you with prediabetes. Prediabetes indicates that you’re well on your way to getting type 2 diabetes if you don’t make some preventive changes.
