Physical Exams Q & A

When would I need physical exams?

A routine physical examination is an excellent way to notice early signs of serious diseases before they cause long-term damage. Other reasons you might need a physical exam include:

Sports and exercise exams

If you're taking up a new sport or starting an exercise program, it's a good idea to see Dr. Bobé for a physical exam before you begin to ensure you're fit enough to take part in your planned activity. If you're already involved in sports, a physical exam might be a requirement for joining a new team or club.

Employment and insurance exams

Some employers require new staff to undergo a physical exam before starting work, or a physical might be necessary to ensure you're still fit for your current job. If you're taking out life insurance, some companies ask for the results of a physical examination before agreeing to the terms of a policy.

Well-man and well-woman exams

These exams assess your overall health, paying particular attention to your reproductive health. For women, that means an internal exam and a Pap smear if one is due. For men, it means a check of your testicles and penis and a prostate exam.

What do physical exams involve?

Dr. Bobé begins your physical exam with a look at your medical history and a discussion about your current health. The next stage is a comprehensive hands-on exam. He checks your vital signs, such as:

  • Blood pressure
  • Heart rate
  • Respiration rate
  • Temperature
  • Reflexes

Dr. Bobé uses a stethoscope to listen to your lungs and heart to see if they sound healthy. He also listens to the sounds in your abdomen and performs a tap test on your liver. He checks for any tender areas on your body or signs of pain and loss of function in your musculoskeletal system.

Dr. Bobé tailors every physical exam to your specific needs. In addition to these basic tests, he might also look at your:

  • Nerve responses
  • Balance
  • Muscle strength
  • Eyes and ears
  • Skin, hair, and nails
  • Teeth and gums

Dr. Bobé is mindful of any issues you've raised or potential risks he's identified during the initial discussion. He also assesses your psychological and emotional health. He can pick up clues that could indicate there's a mental health issue or cognitive problems like memory loss.

Will I need any tests as part of physical exams?

Blood and urine tests are standard for most physical exams. They detect a wide range of health problems, including infections and conditions like diabetes. Sight and hearing tests could be included in your physical exams, too.

If there are any indications of underlying health problems, Dr. Bobé might order additional tests like X-rays, ultrasound, or a CT scan.
